Working with Kids at
Inner Flow

I have completed my Holistic Kinesiology Diploma, specialised training in Kinesiology for Kids (with Emma Sternberg), and Spinal Flow Technique training. I also have 3 kids, aged 18, 16 and 8 so I consider myself fully equipped to support kids of all ages to find harmony at school and home.

My daughter was a huge catalyst in my learning to support kids.  She was about 6 years old when we realised that our ‘strong willed’ child was taking over our lives.  We were living in fear of her next tantrum and had no idea of what to do. We tried charts and rewards, leaning in with more one-on-one time, we even turned to threats and punishment, but nothing helped us achieve the peace and harmony we were looking for. There were so many afternoons when I would pick her up from school to be met with a massive tantrum; so many afternoons that she and I would end up in tears together and I had no idea what to do next.  All the while she was blaming herself and I was blaming myself. The cycle of blame and shame was creating more and more disconnect.  I had to find a way to get us out of this.  Kinesiology was the answer for us (both of us).  Once we realised that it was because her nervous system was overwhelmed and her amygdala had taken over (which in turn was triggering mine), we were able to clear the blockages allowing us to connect again to work together and create peace at home.

In children, an overwhelmed nervous system will often look like tantrums, poor sleep, defiance, trouble with friendships and general overwhelm. It also common for kids to have physical symptoms such as tummy aches, headaches, tics, eczema, poor sleep, food sensitivities and general sensory issues with clothes and food. This may lead to school refusal, separation anxiety, general anxiety and even depression.

Kinesiology can be so helpful for kids because it is a way to help them sort out how they are feeling, as well as work on settling the nervous system.  Using muscle testing we can identify the relevant triggers and work to eliminate or reduce the impact.

Adding Spinal Flow Technique to my clinic is so exciting.  It is a modality that does not require so much analysis so for those of us who are not good at ‘talking it out’ (ie most kids and teens) it is an excellent way to short cut the nervous system, it is almost like reaching in and calming it down which means the brain can feel safe enough to switch out of the fight/flight/freeze mode and into rest and repair mode and then the body does the rest.  Kids often respond very quickly and easily to this therapy.
